If I had to choose, and given you are talking about an 11x14, I would want to see a print of each option paired with the right paper. A Matte Baryta for the minimalist one, a metallic fine art for the first. The mood would be entirely different, and so the final choice should come down to what you want to tell your friend.
My choice would have also been the first shown. The second looked so desolate like I was floating out to sea never to return 😢 The third looked as though I accidentally caught the wood on my right hand side. Reminds me of one of my instructors telling us to go back and look at the edges before printing.
Desolate... never looked at that picture that way but I can see what you mean. I think that would be influenced a lot by other images I paired that middle picture with... Maybe? The mood difference is immense when these foggy semi-abstract or minimalistic images are compared to sunny day pictures of the same place. Also completely different when the placid water you see I stirred up with swell and waves that are no joke during a storm.
I really liked this article explaining your thought process on selection AND intention for the final installation. What a lucky neighbor to get such a special gift! I am not a professional photographer - I take photos to edit & make prints using polymer photogravure plates. You asked which photo I would choose: it would be the one you selected but also edited a bit more. I would have removed the white part of the walkway/bridge on the right as for some reason I found it too jarring in all that dark/grey/moody space. But, since that isn’t a place that would hold decades of memories to me (and having that EMOTION for the viewer was a primary importance) it’s just me and my preference. I really, really like the rocks/pebbles and the water lapping the shore - that curve is great and leads the eye back out to the furthest point. The final selection overall is great and I would be happy to have it hanging on my wall!
Just to clarify, the final selection of the three was the one at the top. I have a bit more to say for this very small project. As for "edited a bit more", stay tuned as I am going to address a little of that when I post something about the other two pictures that made up the triptych.
