absolutely.

fifteen or twenty years ago when I lived in various cities I could find 4'x8' white on one side and black on the other foamcore. now it seems to have all but disappeared. Used to buy that stuff by the dozen...

I've done similar...

Paper Arts is a wonderfully written and thoroughly trustworthy source of information and ideas in the realm of digital construction and reproduction usung different processes. I am not happy with the idea that Substack refuses to cancel my monthly fee. There is no simple mechanism to do that so I've taken to this mechanism to make my feelings known. Again, nothing to do with Paper Arts, they are wonderful.

.. never occurred to you - simply tilting the surface you put your ‘object d’art’ upon ? Perhaps you might even recall ‘turntables.. try to imagine why I might inquire & all the angst regarding tripod or not to tripod .. oh deary me !

Aint shootin Docu motion picture / stills on assignment - just ‘writing for camera / talent - cinematic performance these days. The Algorithm & photo fans detests such stuff - perhaps because it includes Audio ?

Just the other day i posted a Fictional ‘Resort’ Scenario - Illuminated in part by Coffee Machines - ambient light before dawn & pool reflection.. Am dying to have a prelim ‘yak with the DOP who’s gonna ‘light’ that Setting. Yes, the ‘illumination from a iPad ‘will be in play briefly & perhaps an iPhone to illuminate a ‘Key Prop’ .. which is a paperback Novel. 90 secs of screen time & 3 Adult Actors with Dialogue, a Resort Cat & a wild Green Heron

Riddle me this thanks.. How could this be Possible to Accomplish ? In essentially tue same time as you ‘rig for Still Life ? Your reference photos are most excellent btw - & your Site always quite refreshing ! Often wish I had need for your Professional Services. In Toronto I’d have a wealth of Providers of your calibre.. but same applies. My former Clients dealt Directly with them - all part of the Workflow

"and for heaven’s sake stay away from the really-right-stuff website" Oh man, now you tell me! Two tripods, two ball heads, three L-brackets....But it's such great stuff.

we all have our temptations... one of mine IS NOT tripod stuff... but I certainly know people that go all in on that... Novoflex has some nice too....

My career has been a mix of almost every genre, from news, travel, tabletop, food, architecture, hospitality, advertising and more. A tripod is a must. I have loved the RRS small tripod for travel and I have a large one for food and product. I will often mount my camera on one and my laptop on the other while tethering. I really appreciate a solid tripod but all in all I'd rather just put a body on my shoulder and shoot candid. Beats hauling my C-stands to shoots too. thanks for your always positive informative great words.

Art, I couldn't agree with you more. I L-O-V-E my RRS tripods and L-brackets (Bob is just a curmudgeonly great photographer!). I like the engineering RRS puts into their products, the exacting tolerances and their service. At my age I can't hold a camera like Bob can, especially my Fuji GFX body with heavy lenses. RRS to the rescue!

Nor me my GFX. 😂

Thank you for your support...

(Ps. I am sure you're horrified at my C-stand + little ball head overhead solution)

Art Meripol's avatar

heck no! I've used C-stands like that and many so other ways including to hold a shower curtain for an outside 'cleanup'.
