Agree with everything you say here. At the recent Vivian Maier exhibition at Fotographiska they had some comparisons between her contemporary prints and modern prints of the same photo: the difference was significant, and a great example of the level of quality modern silver prints can achieve. Granted, when she printed she may not have had access to the best equipment or materials, but my point is even traditional silver prints when printed well exhibit a luminance and subtlety that is just lost on screen (and the same with inkjet).

And I couldn't agree more with your view on silver prints. They are wonderful.

I have seen a couple of Vivian Maier exhibits. She had a wonderful eye for composition and the prints were gorgeous. Please correct me if I am wrong, but from what I have learned about her is that she did not develop or print her work. In fact, the shows that we see are from negatives that someone else obtained. He was so impressed that he is the one that had those images printed for exhibit. I don't recall if they were digital images or silver gelatin but they were wonderful.

Wonderful article on a topic near and dear to my heart. For me, it's not picture till it is printed and matted. I wish I could have heard your talk at MAPV. Will you be presenting those ideas here in the near future?
