Moab Entrada Coldpress vs. Three new Somerset papers
Moab Natural Coldpress 300 on top. The three new Somerset papers underneath.

A year ago we had our very first unconventional “print contest”. Unconventional in the sense that you don’t make the print we do. One of the things that Les looks at when he’s asked to judge print contests is how well the paper that was selected supports and complements the photograph. Is it neutral? Neutral as in doesn’t add anything nor does it elevate. Does the paper detract in some way? Does it complement and even elevate the photo?

Just like the last free print contest, we’d like you to send us a photograph that you think would be perfect for this installment’s featured paper. We’ll take a look at all of the submissions and select the one that we think is perfect for the paper. What paper are we going to use this time? Well, we recently evaluated the newly revamped line of Somerset papers, all of which are textured and could be considered “cold press” watercolor papers. We compared those to the old Somerset papers made by the same mill but distributed by Moab. We also compared them to Moab’s relatively new offering — Entrada Coldpress 300. The Moab paper is on the more textured end of all of the papers we compared having relatively significant impact rather than less which would be a more typical smooth mat paper.

We realized based on quite a few workshops we’ve hosted that not many photographers have tried a highly textured paper. So… this time around we’ll be looking for photographs that we think would be suited best to this highly textured mat water color paper. The one and only prize for this contest, an A3+ print of the winning picture printed on Coldpress 300 will shipped to your door (only residents of the USA; if you live elsewhere feel free to enter but we will notify you of the cost for shipping).

The Rules

  • Submit one photograph per subscriber (a reasonable sized, email-able, JPEG)

  • The photograph can be color or black & white

  • The theme can be any genre but something you think would work well on a highly textured water color paper.

  • We must receive submissions by October 28th, 2025.

  • The winner will be announced and featured here on November 11, 2025

  • Les and I will decide which submission best fits the bill and looks great on Moab Coldpress 300 paper.

Simple enough? Oh, we do plan on doing many more “Guides To Paper” and the first place we’ll look for example photographs that pair well with various papers is winners of this (and future) photo contests that are specific to various papers. Where does the time go? I’m sorry it took a year to continue this series, we had a ton of great submissions last time around and are looking forward to the same. I promise the next one of these unconventional contests will come much sooner than this one did. Submission details are below for our paid supporters, thank you so much.
